語源
「heretic」はギリシャ語の『hairetikos』に由来し、後にラテン語の『haereticus』を経て成立。ギリシャ語の『hairein』は『選ぶ』を意味した。
『hairetikos』がラテン語『haereticus』に変化し、古フランス語の『heretique』を経て中英語を通じて現代英語の『heretic』になった。
当初は『選ぶ人』を意味したが、徐々に『正統的な教義に反する意見を持つ人』という現在の意味に変化した。
