語源
「aphorismos」は古代ギリシャ語の『ἀφορισμός』（aphorismós）に由来し、接頭辞『ἀπό』（apo-、離れて・外へ）と語根『ὁρίζω』（horizō、境界を定める・限る）が結びついた語です。
古代ギリシャ語の『aphorismos』はラテン語の『aphorismus』などを経て、古仏語・学術語を経由し英語の『aphorism』へと影響を与えました。
当初は「区切り・正式な定義」を意味しましたが、時代と共に意味が広がり、現代では「簡潔で含蓄のある言葉（格言）」という意味で使われることが多くなりました。
