'Anubis'は古代エジプト語の名jnpw（転写すると'inpw'）に由来し、'inpw'はその神の固有名であった。
'Anubis'は古代エジプト語の'inpw'からギリシャ語の'Ἄνουβις（Anoubis）'、次にラテン語の'Anubis'を経て、現代英語の'Anubis'となった。
