語源
'antitype' はギリシャ語由来の要素 'anti-'（〜に対して、反対）と 'typos'（痕跡・型・像）から来ている。
'antitype' は17世紀ごろの英語で造られ、特に神学文献で 'type' とそれに対応する成就を対比する語として用いられた。'type' 自体はギリシャ語 'typos' がラテン語やフランス語を経て入ったものである。
当初は主に神学的用法で『前の型を成就するもの』を指したが、後に一般語として『対応物・正反対のもの』という意味にも広がった。
