語源
「antitropic」はギリシャ語とニュー・ラテン語に由来し、特に接頭辞「anti-」と「tropikos」から来ている。ここで「anti-」は「反対・対抗」を意味し、「tropos」は「向き・旋回」を意味した。
「antitropic」はギリシャ語の要素（ギリシャ語の「antí-」＋「tropikos」）からニュー・ラテン語の「antitropicus」などを経て英語の「antitropic」になり、同根の英語「antitropical」の影響も受けている。
当初は「向きや成長が反対であること」を意味していたが、次第に「両半球の対応する緯度帯に分布する」という生物地理学的な意味でも用いられるようになった。
