語源
「antithetic」はギリシャ語に由来し、特に語『antithetikos』に由来する。ここで接頭辞の「anti-」は「反対」を意味し、『tithenai』（置く、配するを示す語根）が語源にある。
『antithetikos』はラテン語の『antitheticus』などを経て、学術や教会ラテン語などを通じて英語に入り、現代英語の「antithetic」になった。
元は「対立して置かれた／反対に配置された」という意味だったが、時と共に「正反対である、対照をなす」という現代的な意味へと変化した。
