語源
「antitheist」は接頭辞「anti-」（「反〜」）と「theist」（ギリシャ語の「theos」「神」由来）を組み合わせて英語で作られ、「〜に反対する者」を意味する。
「theist」はギリシャ語「theos」（「神」）に由来し、英語で信仰を持つ人を指す語として形成された。19世紀ごろに「anti-」を付けて「antitheist」が作られた。
当初は「有神論者に反対する者」を単に表していたが、次第に「有神論そのものに反対する者」「宗教の影響に積極的に反対する者」という意味合いを持つようになった。
