「antiquarianly」はラテン語の『antiquarius』（中期フランス語の『antiquaire』、中英語の『antiquary』経由）に由来し、『antiquus』は「古い」を意味する。英語では接尾辞『-an』で『antiquarian』を作り、さらに『-ly』で副詞化した。

『antiquarius』（ラテン）→『antiquaire』（古/中フランス語）→『antiquary』（中英語）→『antiquarian』（英語の形容詞/名詞）→『antiquarianly』（英語の副詞）。

元は「古いものに関する」という意味だったが、時とともに古物の蒐集家や研究者に特有の態度・様式を表す意味に発展し、現在は「骨董家のように・骨董家的に」という副詞的用法になっている。
