「antiphonetic」はギリシャ語由来の接頭辞「anti-」と「phonetic」（ギリシャ語'phonētikos'由来）から成り、'anti-'は「反対」、'phonē'は「声・音」を意味し、形容詞接尾辞'-etic'が付く。
「antiphonetic」は近現代英語でギリシャ語由来の'anti-'と英語の'phonetic'（ラテン語/ギリシャ語'phoneticus'／'phonētikos'）を結合して作られ、'発音に即さない'を意味する形容詞として用いられるようになった。
最初は「音声表現に反する」という意味で造られ、その後も語義は限定的に言語学・正書法の文脈で用いられており、大きな意味の変化は起きていない。
