「antiparallel」は、ギリシャ語の接頭辞「anti-」（「反対」の意）とギリシャ語由来の英語「parallel」（「平行」の意）を組み合わせた複合語です。
「parallel」はギリシャ語の「parallēlos」（「para-」＝「そばに」＋「allēl(os)」＝「互いに」）に由来し、ラテン語を経て中英語に入った。『antiparallel』は近代英語で『anti-』を付して作られた比較的新しい語です。
もともとは「並行に対して反対の向き」という構成的意味であったが、技術用語として「位置は平行だが向きが逆」という意味に定着している。
