「antianthropocentrism」は、ギリシャ語と近代英語の構成に由来する。接頭辞「anti-（ギリシャ語 'antí'）」は「反対」、結合形「anthropo-（ギリシャ語 'ánthrōpos'）」は「人間」、「-centrism」は最終的にギリシャ語の「kéntron（中心）」を経た語尾である。
「anthropocentrism」は「anthropo-」と「centrism」を結合して近代哲学の語として成立（19〜20世紀）。「antianthropocentrism」は後に「anti-」を付して反対の立場を示す語として、特に環境倫理やポストヒューマニズムの文脈で20世紀後半に現れた。
