「anti-litter」は接頭辞の「anti-」（ギリシャ語originで「反〜」を意味）と名詞「litter」（散らかったごみ・くず）から作られた現代の複合語です。
「litter」は古フランス語の「litiere」（寝具、わらを敷いたもの）に由来し、さらにラテン語の「lectus」（寝床）にさかのぼります。本来は寝具を意味しましたが、やがて「（散らかっている）物・ごみ」を表すようになりました。「anti-litter」は20世紀に公共の掃除運動や法律が増える中で使われ始めました。
