語源
『anthropopathology』はギリシャ語の要素『anthropos』『pathos』『logia』から来ており、『anthropos』は「人間」、「pathos」は「苦しみ／感情」、「logia』は「学問・語り」を意味した。
『anthropopathology』は近代英語で『anthropo-（anthropos）』と『pathology（pathos＋-logia）』を組み合わせて作られ、19～20世紀以降の神学や学術文献で用いられるようになった。
当初は「人間の苦しみ・感情の研究」を指したが、次第に「感情の研究・描写」「神に人間の感情を帰すること（神学的用法）」、稀に「人間の病理学」を意味するようになった。
