「anthropogeographic」はギリシャ語に由来し、結合形の「anthrōpos」と「gē」と形容詞形を作る「graphikos」に由来する。'anthrōpos'は「人間」、'gē'は「地（地球）」、'graphikos'は「記述に関する」を意味した。
「anthropogeographic」は現代英語の学術語として、ギリシャ語由来の接頭辞「anthropo-」（'anthrōpos'）と既存の形容詞「geographic」（'gē'＋'graphikos'）を結合して形成された。19–20世紀に人文地理学などで一般化した。
