語源
「antagonism」はギリシャ語の『antagōnismos』に由来し、『anti-』は「反する」を、『agōn』は「競技・闘争」を意味した。
『antagōnismos』はラテン語の『antagonismus』などを経て、中英語の『antagonisme』などの形になり、最終的に近代英語の『antagonism』になった。
元々は「競争・対立」を指していたが、次第に「敵対・対立的関係」や専門分野では「拮抗（作用）」という意味に広がった。
