「anointment」は古フランス語の語 'anoindre' に由来し、接頭辞の 'a-'（古フランス語／ラテン語の en-/ad- に相当）は「〜の上に／〜の中へ」を意味し、語幹はラテン語 'unguere'（または 'ungere'）「油を塗る」に由来します。
中英語の 'anoitement'（アンノイントメントのような形）などを経て、最終的に現代英語の 'anointment' になりました。
