語源
「anoesis」はギリシャ語の語『anoēsis』に由来し、接頭辞の「a-」は「〜がない」を意味し、『noēsis』は「思考」や「知性」を意味した。
『anoēsis』は19世紀末から20世紀にかけての意識や心理学の用語として近代ラテン語／学術造語を経て英語に取り入れられ、『anoesis』になった。
当初は意識経験における知的活動の欠如を意味したが、その意味は大きく変わらず、現代では現象学や認知神経科学で反省的意識と対比して用いられている。
