「anneal」は古英語の単語「onǣlan」に由来し、「on-」は接頭辞で「nǣlan」は「(全体を)治す、直す」を意味した。
「anneal」は古英語「onǣlan」から中英語の「anelen」「anealen」などの形を経て現代英語の「anneal」になり、その過程で意味が金属・ガラスの加熱処理に移った。
