語源
「annamitic」は地名「アンナム」（最終的にベトナム語の「An Nam」＝安南）からフランス語の「Annam」を経て由来し、「An Nam」は（中国語の）安（平安）＋南（南）で「平定された南」を意味した。
19せいきのフランス語表記「Annamitique」や「Annamite」などから英語化し、語尾に「-ic」を付けて形容詞が作られた。
初めは歴史的なアンナム地域の人や物を指したが、時代とともにその地域や言語に関係するものを指す一般的（かつ現在ではやや古風・歴史的）な用法になった。
