語源
「anisotropism」はギリシャ語の『anisotrópía』（ἀνισοτρόπια）に由来し、接頭辞の『an-』は「〜でない」、『isos』は「等しい」、『tropos』は「回転・方向」を意味した。
『anisotropia』という新ラテン語／近代ラテン語から影響を受け、関連する英語名詞『anisotropy』と共に科学用語として入り、現在の英語『anisotropism』になった。
当初は「方向ごとに等しくないこと」を示していたが、時間とともに物理学・材料科学・生物学での技術的意味である「性質が方向依存であること」を指すようになった。
