語源
「anisoptera」は新ラテン語に由来し、最終的には古代ギリシャ語の語 'anisos'（ἄνισος）と 'pteron'（πτερόν）から来ており、'anisos'は「不揃い／不等」を、'pteron'は「翼」を意味した。
『anisoptera』は近代の分類学的ラテン語でギリシャ語の語根を組み合わせて作られ、19世紀の動物分類学でトンボ亜目の名称として用いられるようになった。
当初は文字どおり「不揃いの翼」を意味していたが、時間とともにトンボ類（トンボ亜目）を指す学術的な分類名へと変化した。
