語源
「animato」はイタリア語に由来し、動詞「animare（活気づける）」の過去分詞「animato」から来ている。語根の「anima」は「息・魂」を意味する。
ラテン語の「animare」からイタリア語の過去分詞「animato」となり、そのままの形で英語の音楽用語として取り入れられて現代英語の「animato」になった。
当初は「生き生きした・活気づいた」の意味で、英語では音楽記号として「生き生きと（しばしばやや速く）」という専門的な指示へと特化したが、根本の「活気」という意味は保たれている。
