語源
「animalist」は英語で「animal（ラテン語animal＜anima「息・魂」）」＋行為者接尾辞「-ist」から成り、「～に関わる（従事する）人」を表す。
「animal」は古フランス語を経てラテン語animal（anima由来）から中英語に入り、接尾辞「-ist」はフランス語・ラテン語を経てギリシャ語「-istes」に由来し、近代英語で結合して「animalist」となった。
当初は動物や動物表現（芸術）に関わる人を指し、その後、動物福祉・権利の擁護者や哲学上のアニマリズムの支持者の意味へと広がった。
