語源
「animalism」は英語で作られた語で、ラテン語の「animal」（語源は「anima」＝「息・霊魂」）に英語の接尾辞「-ism」（「主義・体系」）が結び付いたもの。
「animal」は古仏語を経てラテン語から中英語へ入り、その後英語で生産的な接尾辞「-ism」を付けて「animalism」となり、現代英語の形が定着した。
当初は「動物的性質・行動」を意味したが、後に「人は動物であるとする学説」という哲学的意味も発展した。
