語源
『angustura』はスペイン語『angostura』に由来し、『angosto』（「狭い」＜ラテン語『angustus』）から派生した語で、樹皮の輸出地名『Angostura』（ベネズエラ）も指した。
『angostura (bark)』は18～19世紀に英語へ入り、医学・植物学では綴り『angustura』も定着した。のちに両形が併用され、『angustura』は樹皮・その樹木を指す語として用いられた。
当初は『Angostura（地名）／狭い所』を指したが、やがて英語では『薬用の樹皮およびそれを産する木』という現在の意味へ発展した。
