語源
「Vietnam」はベトナム語の語『Việt Nam』に由来し、『Việt』はベト（越）を指し、『Nam』は「南」を意味した。
『Vietnam』はシノ＝ベトナム語形の『Việt Nam』（古くは中国語表記で南越や越南など）から変化し、古代には『南越』や『越南』、また語順の異なる『Nam Việt』などが記録される。現代的な国名『Việt Nam』は19世紀初頭に採用された。
当初は「南の越（南方の越の人々）」を意味していたが、時代を経て現代では国家名としての『ベトナム』を指すようになった。
