語源
「penitentiary」は中世ラテン語の'penitentiarius'に由来し、語根の'paenitentia'（ラテン語）は「悔い改め・贖罪」を意味した。
『penitentiarius』は古フランス語の語形（例: penitencier）などの影響を経て英語に入り、17～18世紀の英語では道徳的更生のための施設を指すことがあり、後に刑務所を指すようになった。
当初は「悔い改めに関する（もの）」を意味していたが、時代を経て「犯罪者を更生・収容する施設（刑務所）」という現在の意味に変化した。
