語源
「Orthodoxy」はギリシャ語の『orthodoxia』に由来し、『orthos』が「正しい・まっすぐ」、『doxa』が「意見・信仰」を意味した。
『orthodoxia』は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の『orthodoxia』、古フランス語の『orthodoxie』を経て、中英語の『orthodoxie』となり、現代英語の『orthodoxy』になった。
もともとは「正しい信念・意見」を意味しており、現在でもその核となる意味は保たれているが、宗教以外の分野での「既成の見解」を指す用法にも広がった。
