『heretical』は中世ラテン語の『haereticus/haereticalis』に由来し、ギリシャ語の語根『hairein』は「選ぶ」という意味だった。
『heretical』は後期ラテン語の『haereticus』や古フランス語の『heretique』を経て、中英語を通じて現代英語の『heretical』になった。
