語源
『massif』はフランス語『massif』に由来し、最終的には「かたまり・塊」を意味するラテン語後期の『massa』から来ている。
『massif』は現代フランス語の『massif』から英語に借用され、さらに遡れば古フランス語の『masse』やラテン語後期の『massa』に行き着く。英語にはほぼそのまま『massif』として入った。
当初は『巨大なもの・塊』を指していたが、次第に英語では特に『まとまった山の塊』や『一体として動く地殻ブロック』を意味するようになった。
