語源
「Martu」は現代英語ではオーストラリアのウエスタン・デザート語に由来し、語自体は自称として「人・人々」を意味する。別系統として、楔形文字での「Mar.tu／Mardu」はアッカド語・シュメール語で「西方の人々（アモリ人）」を指す語である。
「Martu」は20世紀の人類学・民族誌文献でオーストラリア先住民の民族名として英語に入った。これとは別に、メソポタミアの「Mar.tu」は紀元前3–2千年紀の文献に現れ、学術訳で『Martu』『Mardu』として受け継がれた。
ウエスタン・デザート語では元来「人」を意味する自称で、英語では特定の先住民集団の民族名になった。メソポタミア語では元来「西方の人々」を意味し、後に学術ではアモリ人を指す語として使われ続けた。
