「Amorite（アモリ人）」はアッカド語の語『Amurru（アムル）」に由来し、その語根は「西方」または「西の土地」を指した。
『Amorite』はアッカド語の『Amurru』から聖書ヘブライ語の『ʿEmori(イェモリ)』を経て、ギリシャ語・ラテン語（例：ラテン語 'Amoritae'）を通じて現代英語の 'Amorite'（複数形 'Amorites'）になった。
当初は「アムルの人々」や「西方の人々」を意味したが、次第に特定の古代民族の固有名詞になり、後世の宗教文献ではカナンのある住民を指す語となった。
