語源情報
「Elsass」はドイツ語に由来し、古高ドイツ語の語『Elsâzi / Elsâz』に由来する。後半の要素は古高ドイツ語の『saz』（『座る』に由来する『座』＝定住地・席）と関係があるとされる。
歴史的変遷
『Elsass』は中世ラテン語・フランス語の形『Alsatia』／『Alsace』へと変化し、英語やフランス語では主に『Alsace』が用いられる一方、ドイツ語では『Elsass』の形が残った。
意味の変化
当初はライン川西岸の特定の領域や「（定住）地」を指していたが、時とともに現在のアルザス地域全体を指す意味に広がった。
