語源
「Commons」は最終的にラテン語の「communis（共有する、共通の）」に由来し、古仏語の「commun」を経て中英語に入った。
中英語の'communs'（複数形）や形容詞'common'（古仏語'commun'、ラテン語'communis'から）に発展し、複数形が共有地を意味する名詞や、後に庶民の代表機関（the Commons）を指す語となった。
当初は「共有されるもの」「共有地」を指していたが、次第に「共同で利用される資源」全般や「庶民院」を表すようになった。
