語源
「ocean」はラテン語の「oceanus」に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の「ōkeanos（巨大な川・海、世界を囲む川）」から来ている。
『ocean』はラテン語の'oceanus'、古フランス語の'occean'のような形を経て、中英語の'occean'となり、最終的に現代英語の'ocean'になった。
当初は神話的・世界を囲むほどの大きな川や海を指したが、次第に地球の大きな塩水域（大洋）や比喩的に『非常に大量のもの』を意味するようになった。
