語源
「Areopagus」は古代ギリシャ語の『Areios pagos』に由来し、『Areios』は「アレスの」、『pagos』は「岩」または「丘」を意味した。
『Areios pagos』はラテン語の『Areopagus』に入り、中世・近代ラテン語や中英語を経てほぼ変化なく現代英語の『Areopagus』になった。
当初は『アレスの丘』という地理的な場所を指したが、次第にそこで開かれた評議会や裁判所、さらには権威ある評議機関を意味するようになった。
