語源
「Archean」は新ラテン語に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の「arkhaios」（「古い」を意味）にさかのぼる。
「Archean」は19世紀後半に地質学用語として（しばしば「Archaean」と綴られて）導入され、新ラテン語とギリシャ語の語根から現代の地質学での代名となった。
もともとは一般的に「古い」を意味していたが、時間の経過とともに地質学的に特定の時代（約40〜25億年前のアーキアン代）を指す専門用語へと変化した。
