語源
「Appalachian」は最終的に先住民の地名「Apalachee」に由来し、スペインの探検者によって『Apalache』や『Apalachee』と記録され、その後ヨーロッパ語に入り『Appalachia』となった。
『Apalachee』（部族・地名）がスペイン語で記録され、『Apalache』／フランス語での『Appalachie』などの形を経て英語の『Appalachia』になり、そこから形容詞『Appalachian』が派生した。
当初はアパラチー（Apalachee）という部族やその地名を指していたが、次第に山脈やその周辺地域、文化的特徴を示す語に変化した。
