語源
「Appalachia」は最終的にスペインの探検者が出会ったアパラチー（Apalachee）という先住民の名前に由来する。スペイン語形は「Apalachee（またはApalache）」と記録され、地域や山に当てられた。
16世紀のスペイン人探検者により記録された「Apalachee」（先住民の名）が、地図や記録を通じて「Apalaches」「Appalaches」などの形で伝わり、最終的に英語で山脈や周辺地域を指す「Appalachia」になった。
当初はアパラチー族そのものや彼らに関連する土地を指していたが、次第に山脈やより広い文化・地理的地域を表す語に拡大した。
