「Anjou」はラテン語（ガロ・ローマ）で『Andegavia』に由来し、これはガリアの部族アンデカウィ（Andecavi）の領域名です。
『Andegavia』は古仏語で『Angeu』『Anjou』のような形に変化し、最終的に現代の地名『Anjou』になりました。
当初はアンデカウィ族の領地を指しましたが、時代とともに中世の伯領／公領やそれに由来する王朝（アンジュー家）、さらに洋梨などの産品や姓にも用いられるようになりました。
