語源
「Amurru」はアッカド語の語『Amurru』に由来し、メソポタミア語でアムル人やその地（文字通り「西方の人々」「西方」）を指すために用いられた。
「Amurru」はシュメール語の語『MAR.TU』（アムル人を表記する語）に対応し、アムル人の西セム語による自己呼称を反映する。この語は旧バビロニア語、ヒッタイト語など古代近東の文献に現れ、ヘブライ語など他のセム語形とも同根である。
当初は「西方の人々」や「西方の領域」を意味していたが、次第にその人々に結び付く守護神の名としても用いられるようになり、現在では歴史・言語学の文脈でアムル人、その領域、またはその神を指す語として用いられている。
