語源
'ASD'は英語のフレーズ『autism spectrum disorder』に由来します。'autism'は最終的にギリシャ語の'autos'（自己）に由来し、'spectrum'はラテン語'spectrum'（像、幻影）に由来し、'disorder'は古フランス語'desordre'（秩序の欠如）に由来します。
'Autism'は20世紀初頭の精神医学文献（ドイツ語の'Autismus'）で自己への退避を表す語として使われました。臨床概念は20世紀中頃から発展し、2013年のDSM-5で標準的な診断名として『autism spectrum disorder』が用いられるようになり、そこからイニシャリズム『ASD』が生まれました。
当初は『自己への退避』を意味しましたが、次第に社会的コミュニケーションの違いや限定的・反復的行動を含む現代の神経発達学的状態を指すようになりました。
