語源
「yerba」はスペイン語に由来し、元は『yerba（またはhierba）』という語で、最終的にはラテン語の『herba（草・ハーブ）』にさかのぼる。
『yerba』はラテン語の『herba』から、オールドスペイン語の『erva』や『hierba』などを経て現代スペイン語の『yerba』になり、（特にアメリカ大陸での）スペイン語使用から英語に借用された。
当初はラテン語やロマンス諸語で『草・ハーブ』を意味していたが、英語では一般的な意味を保ちつつ、英米での用法では特に南米の特定のハーブ（とくにマテ茶の葉）を指すことが多くなった。
