語源
「woody」は名詞「wood（木）」と形容詞語尾「-y」に由来し、「wood」は古英語「wudu」（木・森）に、「-y」は古英語「-ig」（〜の性質をもつ）にさかのぼる。
古英語「wudu」が中英語「wood」となり、語尾「-y」が付いて形容詞「woody」が成立し、現代英語へと受け継がれた。
当初は「木製の」「木が多い」の意で使われ、のちに植物学の専門的意味（木質の）、感覚的な描写（味・香り、音色）、さらに米俗の名詞（勃起）へと広がった。
