語源
「underwhelm」は英語起源で、接頭辞「under-」と動詞「whelm」の結合から成り、「under-」は「下に／十分でない」を意味し、「whelm」は「覆う／押し流す」を意味した。
「whelm」は古英語の「hwealm」などに由来し「押し波・転覆」を意味した。近代英語（19世紀）で「overwhelm」に対する対比として「underwhelm」が作られた。
