「ultramontanist」はフランス語の「ultramontain」から来ており、『ultra』は「～を越えて」、「mont」はラテン語の『mons, montis』に由来し「山」を意味した。
『ultramontanist』はフランス語の「ultramontain」（文字通り「山を越えた所の」）から英語の『ultramontane』になり、さらに『ultramontanist』という語尾変化で『教皇権支持者』を指す語になった。地理的意味から教皇への忠誠を表す宗教政治的意味へと変化した。
