語源
「transposition」は中世ラテン語の語『transpositio』に由来し、接頭辞の『trans-』は「越えて・向こうへ」、『ponere』（過去分詞形を通じて）は「置く」を意味した。
『transpositio』はラテン語の『transponere』（trans-「越えて」+ ponere「置く」）に由来し、古フランス語／中世ラテン語を経て中英語の『transposition』となり、現代英語の『transposition』になった。
当初は「向こうへ置く・移す行為」を意味しており、時間とともに位置の入れ替え、移調、行列の転置、遺伝子の転位などのより具体的な意味へと発展したが、中心的な「位置を移す」という意味は保たれている。
