語源
「theophany」はギリシャ語の『theophaneia』に由来し、『theos』は「神」、「phainein』は「現れる・示す」を意味した。
『theophaneia』は後期ラテン語の『theophania』を経て、中世ラテン語・中英語の神学用語として用いられ、最終的に現代英語の『theophany』になった。
当初は「神の顕現・出現」を意味し、時代を通じて大筋で同様の意味を保ちつつ、特にキリスト教神学の文脈でより限定的に用いられるようになった。
