語源
「tenure」は中英語および古フランス語（オールドフレンチ）の語『tenure』に由来し、ラテン語の語根「tenēre／tenere」は「保持する」を意味した。
『tenure』は中世ラテン語の『tenura』や古フランス語の『tenure』から変化し、中英語を経て現代英語の『tenure』になった。
当初は一般的な「保持すること・保持の状態」を意味していたが、次第に「土地や職務がどのように保有されるか」を指すようになり、現代では特に（学界などでの）「終身的・安定的な任用」を意味するようになった。
