語源
「superintendent」はラテン語の「superintendens」に由来し、'super-'は「上に／超えて」、'intendĕre'（または 'intendere'）は「伸ばす・向ける・指示する」を意味した。
「superintendent」は後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の現在分詞『superintendens』から、古フランス語やアンゴ＝ノルマン語を経て中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の『superintendent』になった。
